Charles Leroy “Sam”
Lutz was born November 21, 1925 in Holton, Jackson County,
Kansas, and died July 8, 2004 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas.
He is survived by his wife Lois, sons Bruce of Ponca City, OK,
Brad of Pittsburg, PA, Greg of Topeka, daughter Kerrie Roberts
of Topeka, KS, two step-daughters, Virginia Head and Christine Cavender of Topeka, and many grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
Sam was laid to rest July 13, 2004 in
the Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka. He had a large extended
family and a life-long accumulation of friends. There was
standing room only at his memorial service in the Mt. Hope
Chapel.
Sam served in the
United States Navy during WW2 (1942-1946) and during the Korean
War (1951-1954). His primary passion was golf, and he continued
to indulge himself—though on a limited schedule in recent
years—until he died. Other main interests were fishing, hunting,
gardening, reading, and his little white dog Sassy.
Sam’s vocation was
barbering, and he was at his barber chair, still working three
days a week, when he died. He had a vast following of loyal
customers, and as he cut back on his work schedule it was only
the oldest customers, and perhaps the most determined, that
ended up on Sam’s appointment list. Family members, wanting Sam
to be prepared when he got to Heaven, put a golf putter, a
package of golf balls, one of his favorite books, and his
barbering kit in his coffin.
